Community Charter Q & A

Q: What Does a Community Charter Do for Buffalo Service Credit Union (BSCU)?

A: Credit unions are typically restricted to servicing a specific group such as an employer, a school, a church, etc. Buffalo Service Credit Union was chartered in 1933 to service both civilian and military federal employees and their select family members. The Community Charter granted to us by the State of New York Banking Department now allows us to service anyone who lives, works, worships or goes to school in Erie County, New York.

Q: Why did BSCU adopt a Community Charter?

A: Like any business, BSCU needs to grow to succeed and position us to serve members for generations to come. We felt that a Community Charter will help us reach this goal.

Q: How does this change help us compete?

A: The local financial landscape has changed dramatically. Credit unions main competition was banks. Since the advent of community charters, not only are we still competing with banks, but there are now fourteen "community" credit unions in the Buffalo area vying for your financial services.

Q: What does this change mean to me?

A: All of the same people, products, services and locations remain. You will see some advertising for BSCU and possibly a name change sometime in the future. As always, your deposits continue to be insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).
